Though it is not currently approved by the FDA, Reloxin is gaining tremendous popularity and so the likeliness of it becoming FDA approved is high.
In Europe, Reloxin is being used under the name Dysport. It consists of the same basic ingredient as Botox, which is Botlulinum Toxin A. They are basically the same thing.
In a recent study, Reloxin was shown to last of equal duration during multiple injections
Another study showed Reloxin spreading further when injected than Botox injections. This may be both an advantage and a disadvantage. You want the toxin to spread in large muscles of the forehead, but in smaller muscles, you do not want it to spread to neighboring muscles.
Reloxin is considered to be one of the first real threats to Botox. It’s a neuromuscular-blocking toxin which inhibits the release of acetylcholine. This reduces muscular spasms. It was originally developed for a medical purpose to treat motor disorders and forms of muscular spasticity (like involuntary eye closure, cervical dystonia and hemifacial spasm).
It was later developed for cosmetic use when it was discovered that it could paralyze the muscles which cause facial wrinkles, which is how these types of injections work.
Experts are just waiting for FDA approval of Reloxin. It was submitted for FDA approval in 2007. It was supposed to be ready for review within 10 months and ready for commercialization in North America. It was found to be in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices, however, the drug remained in limbo in the U.S. market. It’s approved for anesthetic use in 23 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Germany, Honduras, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Moldova, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Slovak Republic, South Korea, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela and Vietnam.
Because Reloxin spreads further with injections than Botox, this may prove to be a positive thing since it can reduce the number of necessary injections. If Reloxin is something you’re interested in, keep your eye on the market and speak to a certified healthcare professional about using it. If you choose to go with Botox injections, you’ll need to go to go to a professional who is certified and trained to use Botox injections.
Botox injections aren’t for everyone. There are a lot of myths surrounding Botox injections, but it is relatively harmless if done properly by someone who is certified and trained to complete these types of injection procedures.
Of course wrinkle prevention is better than trying to get rid of wrinkles once they appear.
