Cellulite is a term used to describe unsightly deposits just below the skin. When we think of cellulite, we often think of weight gain and cottage cheese-like deposits of fat, but cellulite may cause wrinkles too.
Cellulite comes in the form of unattractive fatty bulges, wrinkles and creases. It can be found in the thighs, buttocks, upper arms and shoulders. Cellulite is composed of lumpy deposits that make your skin resemble a puckered orange skin.
Because of this uncanny resemblance, cellulite is sometimes referred to as an orange peel problem
The cells which grow just below the skin have the capacity to store huge amounts of fat. Approximately half of your body’s total fat is deposited in these fat cells. Our ancestors needed these fat deposits in order to survive long months in the freezing cold weather. The elements were harsh in those times and the clothing and indoor protection were not as they are today, so it was necessary.
Round fat-cell chambers are separated into compartments by strands of fibrous tissues which connect the skin to deeper tissue layers. When those fat cells increase in size, the compartments bulge, which produces a waffled appearance on your skin.
Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent cellulite. Exercise is very good for your overall skin appearance and not just for weight management. You can also do facial and neck exercises to help strengthen the muscles and tone in your face and neck. These types of exercises should be done once a day, every day.
Protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun by wearing sunscreen and hats, even if you are indoors, but sitting near a window or will be riding in your car. The sunshine can be damaging to your skin even on days where the sun is not visible.
Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water so that your body and your skin stays well-hydrated. You should be drinking six to eight cups of water a day. Avoid over-consumption of alcohol and smoking, as this is also very damaging to your skin.
Make sure you‘re learning good stress management and that you’re getting enough sleep at night. Avoid sleeping with your face pressed into a pillow or if you can’t seem to curb this habit, use satin or silk pillowcases. Your diet is also very important when it comes to prevention of wrinkles.
You should be using a good skincare regimen in the morning and at night before bed. This should include a cleanser, toner, exfoliater and moisturizer.
