Smoking Causes Wrinkles: If You’re Worried About Wrinkles, You Should Consider Quitting Smoking

We all understand the effects of smoking and if you’ve spoken to your doctor lately, he or she has probably informed you that you need to quit smoking too. With the price of cigarettes on the constant rise, smokers are becoming few and far between.

If you’re concerned about your facial looks and developing wrinkles, smoking is not for you!  It’s a proven fact that smoking accelerates the visible signs of aging.

The effects of aging due to sun exposure can be reversed in many cases, however, the effects of aging due to tobacco cigarette exposure are irreversible!

This is just another sad fact of smoking.  It’s amazing to me that people don’t seem to be aware of the total effects smoking truly has on people.  You can have irreversible skin aging affects after just 10 years of smoking regularly.

The reason smoking cigarettes leads to wrinkles is because it causes the narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin.  When this happens, your blood flow to your skin is impaired, which depletes it of oxygen along with other important nutrients, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin E.

Both Vitamins (and Vitamin C) are essential to skin health.  In fact, smoking tobacco cigarettes blocks Vitamin C absorption of the body and if you are a smoker, you must take a lot more Vitamin E than a non-smoker.

Smoking damages collagen and elastin, which are fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity.  When this happens, your skin will ultimately begin to sag and will prematurely wrinkle.

In 2007, a study which was conducted found that smoking does not just wrinkle your face.  It also increases wrinkling and skin damage on other parts of your body, including the inner arms!

Additionally, repeated exposure to the heat from burning cigarettes combined with the facial expressions people make while they’re smoking (squinting because of the smoke and pursing lips, etc) is also a big contributor of wrinkles.

With all of the information and facts available about smoking, this is a subject which is rarely touched upon.  In this day and age, more and more people are concerned with their looks.  With TV ads and magazines surrounding us, it’s kind of hard not to want to live up to the unrealistic standards presented in the media.  Smoking is very damaging to our looks and it’s an irreversible damage that most young teens would cringe to think about, so perhaps this is something we should be touching on in order to prevent teens from starting this nasty habit.
