Plant-based Antioxidants To Treat Wrinkles

The doctoral research of a Hebrew University Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences member has led to the discovery of a new antioxidant.

A new plant-based antioxidants discovery for treating wrinkles.

Wrinkle skin care is an ongoing concern for most of us. To remove wrinkles is our goal. The key is to reduce the appearance of wrinkles without further damaging the skin.

The research team of a Hebrew University Faculty member led to the discovery of a new antioxidant.  What makes this discovery news worthy is that it’s a plant-based antioxidant rather than antioxidants that have been available.

Isolating a plant-based antioxidant that delays the aging process by countering the breakdown of collagen fibers in the skin and with this discovery, the researcher is  hopeful about the development of a new generation of cosmetic products, which will not only fight wrinkles but will also be effective against deeper levels of skin wrinkles.

Some findings and highlights of this discovery, which have been released include:

Research Findings
a. This is a plant-based antioxidant.
b. It has the ability to retard the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin.
c. This antioxidant has the ability to withstand high temperatures.
d. It is soluble in water and does not oxidize easily.
e. It remains effective for a longer period of time.
f. The plant source of the antioxidant has not been revealed.
g. This research is in the process of being patented.

Highlights of the experiment
a. Experiments were conducted on mice skin tissue.
b. The mice were separated into two groups and exposed to the sun's rays.
c. One group received the antioxidant and the other group did not.
d. The cells of the untreated mice exhibited an increase in free radicals causing wrinkles.
e. The cells of the treated mice showed no significant increase in the free radicals level.

Antioxidants operate against free radicals which cause a breakdown of many tissues in the body, including the skin. When found in small quantities in the body, free radicals are not harmful and are even involved in various physical processes. When there is an excess of free radicals, however, as occurs during normal aging or as a result of excessive exposure to ultra-violet radiation from the sun, the result, among other things, is a breakdown of the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. When this happens, there is a loss of skin elasticity and the formation of wrinkles.  Dr. Orbit Bossi has opened up a new world of possibilities in treating wrinkles with this discovery.  She is looking towards a new generation of cosmetic products, which will not only combat wrinkles but will be more effective against deeper levels of skin wrinkles than the current products.
